Pregnant college student turned away by Planned Parenthood. Welcome by Sacramento Life Center.

Pregnant mom holds belly

A pregnant college student came to us at 22 weeks gestation. She had gone to Planned Parenthood to seek an abortion, but they turned her away because she was too far along for them to be able to do the procedure. They told her to go to UC Davis Hospital, as they do abortions up to 24 weeks. UC Davis turned her away as well because she did not have insurance in place.

That is where the Sacramento Life Center came in.

She came to our clinic because she heard we offer free insurance enrollment help for pregnant women. This is exactly why we offer this service, as it fills a gap in the system, and it gives us a chance to offer our compassion and care to a woman’s situation.

This young woman opened her heart to our patient advocate and wept bitterly.

She really did not want to have an abortion, but felt she had no other choice.

She was afraid to tell her parents as they had big plans for her education. She was afraid they would disown her.

A lot of time was spent with her, talking about her plans, offering her support and resources, and giving her a free ultrasound so she could see how far along and developed her babies are. She left the clinic torn as to her decision, but open to the possibility of changing her mind.

After several attempts to contact her without a response, and many days of prayer, we came to the heartbreaking conclusion that she must have gone through with the abortion. It was a sad time, as we knew these twins were possibly viable, and the procedure at 22 weeks is gruesome. It is something she will carry with her for the rest of her life.

After three weeks of silence, she walked into the clinic with the father of the babies! She still had not told her parents, but they decided to keep the babies no matter what the future holds! We brought the father into the ultrasound room to meet his children on the screen, and he wept at the sight of them. He said that his family would welcome these children, even if her family would not. It was a day of celebration, knowing these children will be able to grow up and have a life!
